This book was the winner of the Golden Tripod Award in 2007. In it, a seven-year-old boy doesn’t like to go to school, because at school everything is under the control of the authorities. Besides, none of his classmates like him. He feels so sad and so hopeless. One day, he decides not to go to school anymore. This is a long, graphic novel written like an autobiography. An adult narrator tells stories of his rebellious childhood and how he changed and matured. The teacher/ student relationship, parent/ children interaction, and the school buildings and the classroom environment are al inspired by the educational outlook in Taiwan during the 80s, giving the whole book a nostalgic flavour. As in most Asian countries, Taiwan’s education is very much oriented toward advanced studies; in other words, intellectual education is given the highest priority. The campus scenes and the education system described in this work give an accurate picture of the common memories of Asian students.
